Minting Money: Playing Card Sales in the U. S
Everyone knows that the Americans like their poker. It seems to encapsulate something about the elusive American identity with the casino, harkening back to the days of saloons, river boats, and desperate hope. When the American fascination with poker is remembered in the context of a commercial economy, it is no surprise that playing card sales continue to be steady. Looking at the figures, over 70 million card packs are sold every year to an American audience.
Playing cards that are sold in American come from all different manufacturers, and of varying styles and prices. If you were to do the math, the annual sales figures work out to at least three new packs per person per year. Obviously, this is not strictly true because casinos buy up a lot of available card decks for professional use.
The continued success of card selling in America is a very strong indication that the internet gambling boon will not eradicate the joy of playing with actual cards. While more and more people turn to online games, they are still buying physical cards to play with at home. This is definitely one part of the American economy that will not disappear anytime soon. Poker is as American as apple pie and the Fourth of July.
