Children’s Car Seats, Convertible Car Seats & Booster Seats — My Cheatsheet

Rules and regulations, brands, styles — your route to a child car seat is often harder than it looks. To negotiate this tangle and end up with the right chair for your needs, you’ll need to be able to understand the technical terms. Let’s get started with the variations in style.

The greatest baby safety seats, manufactured by brands including Cosco, Graco, and many more, are made for babies up to 12 months or 20 pounds. Some of these seats have the capacity to be turned forward, but the majority are entirely intended to face the rear — something to remember when the final choice is made. As an added advantage you’ll find the finest baby safety seats double as reliable baby carriers, eliminating the need to disturb your child when moving him from or to your house. Your babies won’t grow too big for a convertible seat until they’re big enough to do without safety seats completely. Useful throughout the time in which these seats are required, the higher price they command is made up for by being useful for more time. You’ll find, however, that convertible chairs typically don’t double as baby carriers.

Nonetheless, you can’t treat any type of seats as all being the same. Safety seat comparisons are the simplest method of gaining a comprehension of exactly what all the models offer not to mention which features will be most helpful. Choose your car seat knowing most available reviews are independent.

As your son grows, he may bank on a booster seat between approximately thirty to eighty pounds. There are two major choices in fastening — a five-point harness design and one making use of the car’s integral safety belt: which makes us advocate trying both of them by putting your little one in the booster seat to determine which makes for a happier face while keeping the child comfortable. Educational and other toys are often attached to these seats, helping to keep your child quiet as you get on with your driving.

Your budget, your family’s needs, the life you lead — these are all factors that need to be addressed when you buy one of these chairs, and this article was written to make it easier. The smart parent doesn’t neglect ratings and reviews — they are positively the best resource out there.

Size of Your Belly During Pregnancy

Sometimes it seems for pregnant women that their belly is growing before their eyes, or, on the contrary, it’s almost unnoticeable. Let’s read experts comments on this question.

- Which factors sizes of belly during pregnancy depend on?

- Height of belly, i.e. height of uterus normally corresponds to the term of pregnancy. For example, on 32nd week of pregnancy it should be 32-33 cm. And volume of belly depends on a woman’s individual peculiarities. Sometimes anatomic structure affects it: miniature women with slim pelvis have bigger belly, than tall women with full thighs have. But most of all growth of belly is connected with pregnant woman’s general weight gaining. This is the factor which a woman should always pay attention to.

- Which weight gaining is considered to be normal?

- Every woman has her own individual norm. It depends on index of body mass, which can be calculated according to a special formula. Divide weight in kg on height in square meters. Normal index is from 19,8 to 25,9. If you’re expecting twins, add at least 2,3-4,6 kg to this figures.
Majority of women gain 40% of weight during the first half of pregnancy, 60% - during the second. If a woman had normal weight before pregnancy, then in the first term she may gain 1,5-2 kg, during the second - 0,5 kg a week, and for the whole 9th month - no more than 0,5-1 kg. Weight should be increased evenly and little by little. Normal baby’s development depends on this.

- What are the dangers of overweight?

- If a woman gained too much weight, both she and fetus may experience troubles. Excessive weight gaining - is one of the symptoms of late toxicosis, unhealthy state of a pregnant woman. Late toxicosis may lead to development of miscarriage threat. Under such circumstances, a woman begins feeling pains in waist and lower part of belly. In extremely serious cases premature delivery or premature placenta exfoliation may take place.

Moreover, overweight makes muscles work difficult. It also leads to edemas on feet, front abdominal wall, hands. Back and calf-leg muscles begin aching, blood circulation in legs’ veins is gets broken, varicose disease becomes more intense. Pregnant woman gets tired more often and strong, becomes irritable. As for fetus, late toxicosis may cause chronic anoxaemia and even pre-natal death. Very full women’s risk of such complications is higher.

- What can cause extremely quick weight gaining during pregnancy?

- Sometimes those who like eating well gain weight quickly. However, moderation in eating still does not guarantee normal weight. Too much liquid may accumulate in some women’s organisms - for example, when kidneys work not well enough. So, if a pregnant woman gains weight too quickly, she should check quantity of liquid she drinks and evolves for day-and-night. Healthy woman evolves more liquid, than she drinks. And accumulation of liquid in organism leads to overweight. Then not only external organs, but also internal become swollen. Placentas’ edemas are especially dangerous: they break normal fetus development.

- How can a pregnant woman get rid of edemas?

- While visiting maternity welfare centre, she should pay careful attention to recommendations concerning regimen of nutrition, which a doctor will give to her. As a rule, doctors advice all pregnant women to limit salt, piquant, fried and fat products consumption. The matter is that these products contribute to liquid accumulation in organism and lead to edemas. Once in 10 days it is recommended to arrange fasting days. Of course, this does not mean a pregnant woman should go without food. Hunger is categorically contra-indicated to a future mother. During fasting days a pregnant woman should restrict herself with certain products, for example, apples, cotton cheese, kefir, meat in strictly determined quantities. Moreover, she should observe confinement to bed - this improves liquid excretion out of organism. Diuretic herbs also help a lot. However, she should not restrict quantity of liquid drunken suddenly. She should drink no less than 1,2-1,5 liters per day-and-night.

- It turns out that it’s rather simple to struggle with edemas?

- Unfortunately, not always. Weight gaining depends on kidneys’ work in many aspects. Thus, for example, weight is gained quickly if a woman has chronic urolithiasis, chronic pyelonephritis. Sometimes pyelonephritis appears already during pregnancy. As hormonal background is changing during this period. Organism begins producing more of a hormone, contributing to urinary tracts dilation. And various infections come to kidneys through these open gates. That’s why all pregnant women should pass bacteriological test of vagina’s excretions, control urine analyses constantly.

- What if a pregnant woman has too big fetus and this explains her overweight?

- Such thing happens sometimes. But this may testify of another problem. Very often women suffering from diabetes have big fetus. If a woman herself was born being big, then she needs to check sugar content in blood and urine, as diabetes can proceed also in latent form. Sometimes diabetes appears already during pregnancy. Again because of hormonal background change. Such pregnant women are in a risk group - even if heightened sugar content was shown only on one of several tests. By the way, overweight during pregnancy often force obstetricians to use Cesarean section.

- On which terms sudden weight gaining is specially unwanted?

- Excess weight gaining is especially dangerous in the second half of pregnancy, to be more exact, since 20th week. And the earlier such complications happen, the more difficult confinement a woman will have.
That’s why we recommend women to take care of their weight, take arterial pressure on both hands and urine tests. If a woman has late toxicosis, as a rule, her blood pressure increases and albumen appears in urine. If all 3 symptoms are found - edemas, heightened blood pressure and albumen in urine - a woman is urgently hospitalized.

- Probably my question will surprise you. Is it possible to “adjust” a size of fetus somehow?

- I think, yes. Balanced nutrition, including products, rich in animal and vegetable proteins, vitamins, minerals, is necessary for this. A woman should take vitamin preparations for sure. Of course, these are copy-book truths, but a woman observes these rules not always, for this or that reason.

- Apparently, size of belly depends also on quantity of amniotic fluids? Does liquid a woman drinks influence them?

- No. Reasons of excess of amniotic fluids are quite other: diabetes, anomalies of fetus development, Rhesus-conflict, infectious complications. If a woman has little amniotic fluids, this quite often means she will give birth to a post-mature baby.

- Probably, too small belly is better, than too big?

- No, I would not say that. Insufficient weight gaining often leads to defect of fetus development, giving birth to a very small baby, premature birth, and sometimes even to death of a new-born. Pregnant women should strive for “golden middle”.
By the way, American scientists noticed that women with optimistic view on life give birth to babies of small weight less often. Experts explain that optimist women take care of their health better: do exercising regularly and eat well.

- Is there a straight dependence between a pregnant woman’s emotional state and excess kilograms?

- Probably, there is. You know, being under stress situation, some women begin eating any food they see and emptying fridge. Here goes excess weight. And, on the contrary, other women just cannot eat at all in stress situation. That’s why it’s so important for close people and future mother herself to take care of her stable, calm emotional mood.

Approximate allocation of weight gained during pregnancy
Baby 3,5 kg
Placenta 0,675 kg
Amniotic fluid 0,8 kg
Increased uterus 0,9 kg
Breasts 0,45 kg
Volume of mother’s blood 1,5 kg
Intracellular fluid of mother 1,4 kg
Adipose cellulose of mother 3,25 kg
GENERAL WEIGHT INCREASE 11,9 kg

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream, But Not For Ice Cream!

We all scream for ice cream. Or, we don’t, at least not anymore.

Before moving to this sleepy suburb as kids, we lived in the city. We’d walk to the corner store for an italian ice. I barely kindergarten age when we moved south of Boston, but I remember the cool lemony goodness on a wooden stick like it was yesterday.

When we moved to the ‘burbs, we didn’t have to go to the store anymore for a treat. The ice-cream truck would come to us, (though I seem to remember calling it the slush truck?) Of course, looking back, I see that an ice cream truck was just one more hurdle in my weight gain problems, but this is a happy memory, damnit.

During the summer months, you’d hear the distinct sound of bells, calling to us kids like the Pied Piper of frozen confections. We’d haul up the driveway, down the street, out of the woods, with quarters, dimes and nickels, to buy a “graveyard” slush. Does anybody remember this- getting all those syrupy sweet flavors mixed together to make a greyish-blackish mud of a slush? Maybe it was just my brother who ordered it like that? I used to love watermelon, cotton candy, anything pink.

Now, I’m the mom, living in the same town. We don’t have an ice-cream man anymore. Occasionally one comes by, but he’s here after bedtime, thanks Mister for getting the kids riled up after 8pm with the thought of drippy Spiderman sherbet on a stick with gumball eyes! (He needs to alter his route and get here earlier to make the big bucks from my three treat-loving kids.)

It’s different now, though. We’re more conscious of food choices, and running to get an ice cream cannot be a daily habit.

Not only that, parents these days are insanely aware of anyone who drives slowly through a residential neighborhood who doesn’t belong. Welcome to the age of Amber Alerts, Attempted Child Abductions, Missing & Exploited Children, & Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board.

Children don’t run to ice cream trucks alone anymore. Children don’t walk to the store to get a treat anymore. When we were kids, we didn’t think much of walking up to the center of town to get something. I’ll have to ask my mother, but I don’t remember how old I was when she finally let me go with a friend to the store, but I know it was a lot younger than I’ll consider letting my kids go to the same place.

It’s not that it’s any different here, it really isn’t, but the years that have passed have changed things and changed people.

The years have taken the ice cream man.

How to Foster a Love of Reading and Writing in Your Child

The key to lifelong learning is reading and writing. When reading and wiring are a regular part of your family’s life, you send your child the message that they are enjoyable, valuable and great ways to learn. Here are some ways you can start helping your child:

Reading

Keep many age appropriate books and other reading materials in your house. If you have the time, schedule weekly or biweekly trips to the library with your child. Take out books for yourself too. Show your child that you value reading and that it is important to you.

Start reading to your child at an early stage.

Make reading daily to your infant or toddler part of your daily routine. It doesn’t have to be for more than 20 minutes a day. Do it at the same time each day, if you can, so that you both become accustomed to it. Have fun reading to your baby. Choose books with vivid colors and point out images and shapes to your baby. Be animated with your voice and facial expressions.

When your child becomes a preschooler, you can start reading for a longer period of time. To help develop your child’s critical thinking skills, encourage your child to ask questions or to predict what will happen next in the story. Be enthusiastic about reading. Read the story with expression. Make it more interesting by talking as the characters would talk, making sound effects and using facial expressions and gestures. Encourage your child to do the same.

As your child’s ability to read develops, let your child pick out a favorite book to read alone. Make time to read the books together. Take turns, with you reading one page or paragraph and your child reading the next. You might also read the parts of different characters in a story. If your child is unsure of the meaning of a word, have your child use the surrounding words or sentences to figure it out. If this doesn’t help, just tell your child what the word means and keep reading. Buy a children’s dictionaryif possible, one that has pictures next to the words. Help your child get into the habit of looking up unfamiliar or difficult words. The American Heritage Picture Dictionary is great for preschool and early elementary school students.

StarFall.com is a great website for learning to read for pre-kindergarten to second grade. All the learning materials are free. http://www.starfall.com/

If you notice that your child is having some difficulties with reading, get some help for your child. The problem can be related to poor vision or your child might help extra help. Find tutoring services in your neighborhood or online to help your child. Identify if your child is having problems with vocabulary or reading comprehension.

You can get a free reading aptitude test for grades 2-10 at Mind Play.com-http://www.test4free.com/assess.asp

The good news is that no matter how long it takes; most children can learn to read. By working together with your child’s teacher and other educational professionals, you can determine if your child has a learning disability or other problem.

As your child gets into middle school and high school, your child will have other distractions and interests. You can continue to help your child by buying books that would be of interest to them.

Writing

You can encourage even your reluctant child to become a writer. The key id to help your child understand that writing is an important communication tool. Writing also helps your child to organize his or her thoughts more clearly.

Here are some tips for getting your child to write more.

Have your child write stories that are of interest to him or her. If your child is a reluctant writer, ask your child to write about something he or she wishes for or dreams about.

Don’t point out errors in their writing, but guide our child so that he or she can make the corrections. Ask your child to tell you more about the story or ask your child to create a book based on the short writing assignments. The point of this exercise is to help your child express thoughts through writing. If your child’s strength is not writing, do not force your child to become an avid writer.
Be enthusiastic about your child’s writing. Ask you r child to read what he or she has written to you. Hang up your child’s writing and encourage other family members to read it.

Have your child write thank you notes to family and friends or write notes to your child or use a message board to leave notes for your child. Encourage him or her to write notes to you too!

When you child is upset or sad, if he or she is up to it, have your child express the feeling through writing.

As your child gets older, you can support his or her writing needs by helping to get thoughts organized and making sure that the writing is intelligible and coherent. Let your child see you writing so that your child understands that writing is important.

Most importantly, make writing fun for your child.

If you want to contribute to your child’s love of learning, you must model the enthusiastic attitude towards learning you would like your child to possess. By showing your child that you value learning and education, your child will develop better feelings towards education.

Your Baby Is Having His First Cold - What To Do

As a new parent both you and your family are probably overjoyed. The first few months has been nothing but wonderful and you are hoping it will stay like this forever. Unfortunately everyday life does not work like that and you are bound to experience some bumps in the road along the way and nothing is worse than when your baby gets sick.

Like everyone else, you will wake up one morning and find that your little baby has got a real bad cold. Listening to that little chest being so congested can for many first time parents be very traumatic. You may not be quite sure of what to do and feel completely helpless because you can tell your baby is having a hard time breathing and he has a little bit of a fever.

In most cases of a baby cold there is no reason to panic and for most babies there is no reason to take them to the doctor either. Of course if taking him to the doctor make you feel better and safer that is what you should do. For anything you are not sure of when it comes to your child you should seek advice from somewhere. Anyway, like mentioned, with most baby colds there is normally no reason to rush to the doctor.

As for yourself when you have a cold there are certain things you should do for your baby when he has a cold. Here are a few ideas which can make it easier for both you and your baby. First of all make sure they get lots of fluids to keep them from dehydrating, this is very important.

In order for your baby to be able to breathe better, purchase one of those mist humidifiers and keep it on while the baby is taking a nap and at night time. This will help loosen up the cough secretions and let them breathe better. A humidifier will also help you if you get a cold so it is not a waste of money.

Keep their head elevated. Try to put something under the baby’s mattress to build up their head elevation. Babies always breathe better if elevated and not laying flat on their back during sickness.

If your child has a bad coughing spell, go in the bathroom turn on the shower with real hot water so it will steam up the bathroom. Sit the baby on your lap and let them breathe in the steam. This will help ease their cough.

Other things you can do to keep your child more comfortable during this time is to make sure you have things around the house to lessen the fever and discomfort like for example infant Tylenol. Also make sure to give lots of love, hugs and kisses just to let them know you are there for them.

All of this is only suggestions but hopefully it will help you get through your baby’s first cold.
